Most of the RAM Disk software out there basically all works the same, the issue here seems to just be that the Guest OS doesn't see a RAM Drive mounted via the settings off the Host OS or Hyper-V has no idea what to do with dynamic memory when software tries to allocate so much of it at once.Įdit: You know something I didn't think about until just now? This was a Gen2 VM, all drives can only be added on a SCSI Controller. I tried some other software and the iSCSI method with mixed results, either more of the same or nothing at all. Also constant alerts about a drive running low on space is not fun. You can assume how this turned out after a reboot. Unless I could find a way to keep the memory demand in line I do not believe this option will work.Īs a last ditch effort I also attempted to just keep the RAM Disk mounted on the Host OS and put a VHDX file on the RAM Disk for the Guest OS. With the previous failure I attempted to just run the SoftPerfect software inside of the VM, boy was this a bad idea! Dynamic memory goes crazy, nearly doubling the Memory Demand once the disk is mounted. This option appears it would work best if I could just manage to get the Guest OS to recognize the disk. The problem is when ever I select the disk in the VM Settings it never appears on the guest OS and I can't seem to use it. SoftPerfect RAM Disk seems to not mind this either, allowing the drive to stay this way on reboots.
Now the issues I have run across from multiple attempts.īy default Hyper-V does not see the RAM Disk in the settings on the host OS unless you select "Hard Disk Emulation (slower)" in order to take the disk offline.
After a reinstall of the host OS I decided to try and move this service to a VM as well since the migration of all the other VMs went so well. I used this option when I had it installed on bare metal and pointed it to a RAM Disk I created with SoftPerfect RAM Disk. I debated posting this to r/sysadmin but I would also like to keep this to Hyper-V, not just get flooded with posts of, "USE SOMETHING ELSE!" I am attempting to run a Windows 10 VM hosting a media server, this media server (Jellyfin) lets you select a location to use as a temp drive for re-encoding files.
